Roadmap

Last updated: 2026-08-10 | Maintainer: tuna-os (hanthor) / packaging maintainers

Mission

Own the native packaging, patches, build ordering, validation, signing, and publication work needed to ship curated desktop stacks for TunaOS variants β€” independently of third-party repositories. The active production chain is the native EL10 RPM build for GNOME and XFWL4, published via GitHub Actions + Mock to Cloudflare R2 (COPR is bootstrap/compatibility only, being retired).

Current Status (August 2026)

  • GNOME 51 packaging kicked off for EL10 (08-10) β€” build-order-gnome51.yml active.
  • XFWL4 ported to Debian/Ubuntu manifests (08-10) β€” cross-base parity work started.
  • Desktop parity audit is the top risk: tunaos-packages#133 found 24 of 37 published editions are too small to contain their desktop (non-RPM bases: sailfin/flounder/grouper ship +0.16–0.33 GB desktop deltas vs +0.7–2.5 GB healthy). Every image has exactly 65 layers, so layer count masks the problem. Tracks upstream on tunaos#1294.
  • COPR migration to GitHub/R2 in progress; native GNOME EL10 specs stay until the R2 pipeline passes build + staged-install + desktop runtime gates.

Priorities

PriorityItemTrackingStatus
P0Close the desktop parity gap (sailfin/flounder/grouper editions)#133, tunaos#1294πŸ”΄ Open β€” 24/37 editions suspect
P0Keep GNOME 51 EL10 bootstrap greenbuild-order-gnome51.yml🟑 In progress
P1Niri compositor packaging for Debian/Ubuntu (flounder/grouper niri)#136, #152🟒 Closed β€” niri DEB matrix cells added and verified
P1Tideforge dependency/metadata correctness (RPM+DEB)#117, #118πŸ”΄ Open
P1Decide Gentoo path for guppy:cosmic and guppy:niri#162🟒 Closed β€” Use Gentoo overlays (::guru & ::cosmic-overlay); no Tideforge emitter needed
P2EL10 peripheral/security-key tooling (input-remapper, evtest, …)#122, #126πŸ”΄ Open

Quarterly Goals

Current Quarter (2026 Q3) β€” "Expand"

Theme: Variant coverage with complete desktops, and R2-first publishing.

GoalOwnerTrackingStatus
Publish GNOME + XFWL4 EL10 via GitHub/R2 (retire COPR)packagingARCHITECTURE.md, COPR-AUDIT.md🟑 In progress
Desktop-completeness parity floor for every published editionpackaging#133, tunaos#1294, docs/desktop-parity-audit.md🟑 In progress
XFWL4 package coverage on Debian/Ubuntu basespackaging#136🟑 In progress
Tideforge: first-class python build system + correct depspackaging#137, #117, #118🟑 In progress

Next Quarter (2026 Q4) β€” "Mature"

  • Sign every published artifact (RPM/DEB + SBOM attestation) β€” ties to tunaos Q4 supply-chain goal (tunaos#1187).
  • Parity audit passes as a release gate, not a manual check β€” ties to tunaos#1270 variant admission.
  • Package signing key rotation + disaster-recovery docs (per INCIDENT-repo-wipe-gnome.md).
